『Johnny the Fox』は、ストリート感ある物語とツイン・ギターを深め、THIN LIZZYが多彩な表情を見せた第7作だ。大ヒット作『Jailbreak』と同じ1976年に、短期間で録音された。ライノットが肝炎から回復する間に制作が進められ、勢いを保ったまま同年のうちに完成した。「ジョニー・ザ・フォックス」という主人公を軸にした、緩やかなコンセプト性も帯びている。ハード・ロックを基調としつつ、ファンクやソウル、R&Bの感触を取り込み、バンドの幅を大きく広げている。 “Don't Believe a Word”“Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed”“Rocky”といった、多彩な楽曲が並ぶ。フィル・ライノットが紡ぐ、ならず者を主人公にした物語性が全編を彩っている。ゴーハムとロバートソンのギターは、硬質さとしなやかさを兼ね備えている。前作の勢いを受け継ぎながら、より多様な音楽性を示した充実の一枚である。ロバートソンにとっては、しばらくの間これが最後の全面参加作となった。多彩さと初期の勢いが同居する、彼らの隠れた代表作の一つといえる、実に充実した一枚だ。

Johnny the Fox is Thin Lizzy's seventh album, on which they deepened their street-flavored storytelling and twin guitars, showing a varied range of expressions. It was recorded in a short span in 1976, the same year as the huge hit Jailbreak. Work proceeded while Lynott recovered from hepatitis, and it was completed within the same year with their momentum intact. It also carries a loose concept centered on the character 'Johnny the Fox.' While rooted in hard rock, it takes in funk, soul and R&B textures, greatly broadening the band's range. Varied songs like "Don't Believe a Word," "Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed" and "Rocky" line up. Phil Lynott's storytelling, centered on rogue characters, colors the whole record. The guitars of Gorham and Robertson combine hardness with suppleness. Carrying over the momentum of the previous album, an accomplished record showing a more diverse musicality. For Robertson, it became his last full album with the band for some time. A record where variety and early momentum coexist — arguably one of their underrated signature works.
