『Bad Reputation』は、ツイン・ギターの躍動とフィル・ライノットの物語性を結び、THIN LIZZYが勢いを保った第8作だ。ブライアン・ロバートソンが手の負傷でほぼ不在となったため、スコット・ゴーハムがギターの大半を一人で担った。プロデュースは、デヴィッド・ボウイらで知られるトニー・ヴィスコンティが手掛けている。録音の一部はカナダのトロントで行われた。ロバートソンは数曲でゲストとして参加するにとどまったが、その分ゴーハムが多くのパートを重ね、緻密なギター・サウンドを作り上げている。 “Dancing in the Moonlight”“Bad Reputation”“Soldier of Fortune”といった、力強い楽曲が並ぶ。ホーンやサックスも導入され、洗練された音の広がりが加わっている。タフさと哀愁を併せ持つライノットの歌が、全編を貫いている。ゴーハムの多層的なギター・ワークが光る、バンドの充実期を示す一枚である。本作はイギリスで4位に達した。この作品を最後に、ロバートソンは正式にバンドを去っている。タフさと洗練を兼ね備えた、彼らの成熟期の入り口を確かに告げる一枚だ。

Bad Reputation is Thin Lizzy's eighth album, on which they kept their momentum by tying the dynamism of their twin guitars to Phil Lynott's storytelling. With Brian Robertson largely absent due to a hand injury, Scott Gorham handled most of the guitars himself. Production was by Tony Visconti, known for his work with David Bowie. Part of the recording took place in Toronto, Canada. Robertson only guested on a few tracks, so Gorham layered many of the parts himself, building a dense guitar sound. Powerful songs like "Dancing in the Moonlight," "Bad Reputation" and "Soldier of Fortune" line up. Horns and saxophone were introduced, adding a refined sonic breadth. Lynott's singing, combining toughness with melancholy, runs throughout. A record showing a fruitful period for the band, where Gorham's layered guitar work shines. The album reached No. 4 in the UK. After this record, Robertson officially left the band. Combining toughness with refinement, it announces the threshold of their mature period.
