『Chinatown』は、ツイン・ギターの流麗さと都会的な陰影を重ね、THIN LIZZYが新編成で進んだ第十作だ。ゲイリー・ムーアの脱退を受けて、元PINK FLOYDのツアー・ギタリスト、スノーウィー・ホワイトが加入した。当時18歳のダレン・ウォートンがキーボードで加わり、バンドのサウンドに新たな彩りを添えている。ホワイトは、PINK FLOYDの『The Wall』ツアーでデヴィッド・ギルモアと並んで弾いた経歴を持ち、ゴーハムとの相性も良かった。録音はロンドンのGood Earth Studiosで行われた。 タイトル曲“Chinatown”や、賛否を呼んだシングル“Killer on the Loose”まで、緊張感のある楽曲が並ぶ。切り裂きジャックを題材とした“Killer on the Loose”は、物議を醸しながらもイギリスでトップ10ヒットとなった。ゴーハムとホワイトのギターは、往年の輝きを保っている。本作はイギリスで7位に達した、新体制での確かな一歩である。ライノットが薬物に深く傾倒し始めた時期にあたるが、バンドのツイン・ギターの魅力は健在だった。緊張感と華やかさが同居する一枚である。

Chinatown is Thin Lizzy's tenth album, on which they moved forward with a new lineup, layering the fluidity of their twin guitars with urban shading. Following Gary Moore's departure, Snowy White, the former touring guitarist of Pink Floyd, joined. Darren Wharton, then 18, came in on keyboards, adding new color to the band's sound. White had played second lead alongside David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's The Wall tour, and gelled well with Gorham. Recording took place at Good Earth Studios in London. Tense songs line up, from the title track "Chinatown" to the divisive single "Killer on the Loose." Based on Jack the Ripper, "Killer on the Loose" became a UK Top 10 hit despite the controversy it stirred. The guitars of Gorham and White keep their old-time shine. The album reached No. 7 in the UK, a solid step forward under the new lineup. It came at a time when Lynott was slipping deeper into drugs, yet the band's twin-guitar appeal remained intact. A record where tension and flamboyance coexist.
