『Fishing for Luckies』は、THE WILDHEARTSが持つパンクの荒さ、パワー・ポップの甘さ、長くねじれた曲構成を、同じ場所へ押し込んだ作品だ。短いフックの直後に予想外の展開が現れ、音楽は常に落ち着かない。もともとは企画的な作品として構想されたが、その自由な発想が、かえってバンドの創造性を鮮やかに映し出している。 “Inglorious”“Sick of Drugs”“Red Light - Green Light”“Sky Babies”といった楽曲では、まとまり切らないほど多くの要素が抱えられている。“Schizophonic”“Mood Swings and Roundabouts”のような楽曲にも、ジンジャーのメロディ感覚が全体をつないでいる。“Do the Channel Bop”“In Like Flynn”“Nite Songs”のような楽曲にも、バンドの多彩な魅力が息づいている。本作はもともとファン・クラブ向けのリリースなどを経て編まれた経緯を持ち、その分だけ実験的で自由な色合いが濃く、型にはまらない創作意欲を存分に味わえる一枚だ。整ったロックからはみ出すことをためらわない姿勢が、このバンドならではの危険なポップ感を生み出している。混沌をそのまま魅力へと変える、実験精神に満ちた一枚だ。

Fishing for Luckies is a work on which THE WILDHEARTS pushed their punk roughness, power-pop sweetness and long, twisting song construction into the same place. Right after a short hook, an unexpected development appears, and the music is always restless. It was conceived at first as a project-type work, but that free thinking instead vividly reflects the band’s creativity. On “Inglorious,” “Sick of Drugs,” “Red Light - Green Light” and “Sky Babies,” more elements than can quite be contained are held. Songs like “Schizophonic” and “Mood Swings and Roundabouts” have Ginger’s melodic sense tying the whole together. A stance that does not hesitate to spill out of tidy rock creates the dangerous pop feel particular to this band. Turning chaos directly into appeal, it is a record full of experimental spirit.
