『Chutzpah!』は、THE WILDHEARTSがパンクの性急さとハード・ロックの大きなメロディを、鋭く混ぜ合わせた作品だ。短く切り込む曲でも、ギターの層とコーラスには豊かなアイデアが詰まっている。荒っぽいエネルギーがありながら、ポップな感覚は少しも失われていない。 “The Jackson Whites”“The Only One”“Tim Smith”“You Took the Sunshine from New York”といった楽曲では、そのバランスがバンドの自由奔放さを最も痛快な形で伝えている。“Plastic Jebus”“Low Energy Vortex”のような楽曲にも、確かなメロディ・センスが息づいている。“John of Violence”“You Are Proof That Not All Women Are Insane”“Mazel Tov Cocktail”といった楽曲にも、皮肉とユーモアに満ちた個性が息づいている。タイトルの「Chutzpah」はずうずうしさや大胆不敵さを意味するイディッシュ語でありバンドの姿勢をよく表しているが、従来のサウンドに新たな要素も取り入れ、バンドの表現の幅を広げた意欲作だ。荒々しさと親しみやすさが同居するその音は、キャリアを重ねてもなお衰えないバンドの創造力を示している。混沌とポップネスの絶妙な共存を味わえる、充実した一枚である。

Chutzpah! is a work on which THE WILDHEARTS sharply blended the urgency of punk and the big melody of hard rock. Even in songs that cut in short, the layers of guitar and the choruses are packed with rich ideas. There is rough energy, yet the pop sense is not lost in the least. On “The Jackson Whites,” “The Only One,” “Tim Smith” and “You Took the Sunshine from New York,” that balance conveys the band’s free-spirited nature in its most exhilarating form. Songs like “Plastic Jebus” and “Low Energy Vortex” breathe a firm melodic sense too. That sound, where roughness and accessibility coexist, shows the band’s creativity, undimmed even as the career piles up. It is a full record for savoring the exquisite coexistence of chaos and pop-ness.
