21st Century Love Songs

『21st Century Love Songs』は、THE WILDHEARTSらしい、パンクの衝動、ハード・ロックの重量、パワー・ポップの極上のメロディが一つの塊になった作品だ。曲は予測不能に展開するが、どれほど荒々しくなっても、ジンジャーのソングライティングは必ず強いフックへと戻ってくる。前作『Renaissance Men』の勢いを受け継ぎ、バンドはさらに充実した表現を展開している。 表題曲“21st Century Love Songs”“Remember These Days”“Splitter”“Sort Your Fucking Shit Out”といった楽曲では、怒りや不安、ユーモアや優しさが同じ曲の中に入り込んでいる。“You Do You”“My Head Wants Me Dead”のような楽曲にも、生々しい感情が刻まれている。“Institutional Submission”“Directions”“A Physical Exorcism”のような楽曲にも、生々しい感情と鋭いフックが同居している。現代社会への鋭い視線と、ジンジャー自身の内面をさらけ出したような歌詞が、力強いサウンドと共に胸に迫ってくる。バンドの長い歴史を感じさせながらも、音はあくまで生々しい。整いすぎたロックでは物足りない人に向けた、混沌とポップネスの見事な共存を示す一枚である。

21st Century Love Songs is a work in which, characteristically for THE WILDHEARTS, punk impulse, hard-rock weight and superb power-pop melody become a single mass. The songs develop unpredictably, but however rough they get, Ginger’s songwriting always returns to a strong hook. Inheriting the momentum of the previous album Renaissance Men, the band develops an even fuller expression. On the title track “21st Century Love Songs,” “Remember These Days,” “Splitter” and “Sort Your Fucking Shit Out,” anger, anxiety, humor and tenderness enter the same song. Songs like “You Do You” and “My Head Wants Me Dead” carve raw emotion too. While conveying the band’s long history, the sound is thoroughly raw. It is a record showing the splendid coexistence of chaos and pop-ness, aimed at those for whom over-tidied rock is not enough.
