『Electric』は、THE CULTが以前の耽美的な空気を削ぎ落とし、太いリフと乾いたビートを前面に出した第3作だ。ビリー・ダフィーのギターは余計な装飾を抑えながら、曲を一撃で印象付けるフレーズを鳴らしている。名プロデューサー、リック・ルービンを迎え、バンドは骨太なハード・ロックへと大胆な方向転換を果たした。 “Love Removal Machine”や“Wild Flower”“Lil' Devil”は、単純な反復が持つ強さを最大限に生かしている。“Peace Dog”“King Contrary Man”といった楽曲にも、剥き出しのロックンロールの魅力が息づいている。“Aphrodisiac Jacket”“Electric Ocean”“Outlaw”のような楽曲にも、剥き出しの勢いが息づいている。前作までの壮大なサウンドから一転しAC/DCを思わせるような直球のロックンロールへと舵を切った本作は当時大きな驚きをもって迎えられ、リック・ルービンとの出会いがバンドの方向性を決定づけた重要作となった。ステッペンウルフの“Born to Be Wild”のカヴァーも収録され、バンドの新たな志向をよく表している。サウンドを研ぎ澄ますことで、バンドの野性味とロックンロールの身体性を引き出した本作は、彼らの転機となった一枚だ。

Electric is the third album on which THE CULT stripped away their former aesthete air and pushed thick riffs and a dry beat to the front. Billy Duffy’s guitar restrains excess ornament while sounding phrases that stamp the songs in a single strike. Welcoming the great producer Rick Rubin, the band made a bold change of direction toward sturdy hard rock. “Love Removal Machine,” “Wild Flower” and “Lil' Devil” make the most of the strength of simple repetition. Songs like “Peace Dog” and “King Contrary Man” breathe the appeal of bare rock ’n’ roll too. A cover of Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild” is also included, well expressing the band’s new orientation. By sharpening the sound to draw out the band’s wildness and the physicality of rock ’n’ roll, it became a turning-point record for them.
