Born into This

『Born into This』は、THE CULTが太いギター・リフと浮遊感のある空気を、コンパクトな曲作りへと落とし込んだ作品だ。イアン・アストベリーの声は呪術的な存在感を保ち、ビリー・ダフィーのギターは曲を鋭く照らしている。再びの活動休止を経て、バンドが届けた力強い一枚である。 表題曲や“Dirty Little Rockstar”には、バンドらしい野性味とフックが同居している。“Citizens”“Diamonds”“Illuminated”といった楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“Holy Mountain”“I Assassin”“Tiger In the Sun”“Savages”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。イアン・アストベリーは一時期ザ・ドアーズの再結成プロジェクトでヴォーカルを務めるなど活動の幅を広げていたが、約6年ぶりの新作となった本作でTHE CULTとしての新たな一歩を刻み、原始的なロックの衝動を全編に息づかせている。過去の名盤を模倣するのではなく、原始的なロックの衝動を今の音で鳴らしている。ベテランとなってもなお、バンドの持つエネルギーと個性は少しも衰えていない、充実した一枚である。

Born into This is a work on which THE CULT distilled thick guitar riffs and a floating air into compact songwriting. Ian Astbury’s voice keeps an incantatory presence, and Billy Duffy’s guitar sharply lights the songs. It is a powerful record the band delivered after another hiatus. The title track and “Dirty Little Rockstar” hold the band’s characteristic wildness and hooks together. Songs like “Citizens,” “Diamonds” and “Illuminated” breathe the band’s full playing too. Rather than imitating past masterpieces, they sound a primal rock impulse in a present-day sound. Even as veterans, the band’s energy and personality have not dimmed in the least — a full record.
