Verminous

『Verminous』は、鋭利なギターと怪物的な物語性が暴走する、THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDERの第9作だ。ブランドン・エリスのリード・ギターを擁する布陣が、スラッシュやドゥーム、ブラック・メタルの要素まで大胆に取り込み、これまでで最も色彩豊かで実験的な一枚へと踏み込んでいる。フロントマンのトレヴァー・ストルナドはこれを「一作ごとの進化として最大の飛躍」と語っており、その言葉通り、攻撃性と表現の幅が大きく広がっている。通算9作目にあたる本作は、2020年4月、奇しくも世界的なパンデミックのさなかにリリースされ、多くのリスナーが自宅でじっくりと向き合う一枚となった。 先行シングルであり冒頭を飾る“Verminous”は、地下に蠢く者たちの世界を描いた、疾走感あふれる代表曲だ。ゾンビ黙示録を歌う“Godlessly”、切り裂きジャックを題材にした“The Leather Apron's Scorn”まで、多彩な楽曲が並ぶ。ストルナドの表現力豊かな咆哮と、エリスの華麗なギター・ワークが全編を牽引する。本作は結果として、彼が参加した最後のアルバムとなった。円熟の頂点で放たれた、バンド屈指の力作である。

Verminous is The Black Dahlia Murder's ninth album, on which incisive guitars and monstrous storytelling run wild. The lineup, featuring Brandon Ellis on lead guitar, boldly took in elements of thrash, doom and even black metal, stepping into their most colorful and experimental record yet. Frontman Trevor Strnad called it "the biggest evolutionary leap from one album to the next," and true to his words, its aggression and expressive range widen greatly. Their ninth full-length, it was released in April 2020, amid the global pandemic, becoming a record many listeners sat with closely at home. The lead single and opener "Verminous," depicting a world of those teeming underground, is a signature song full of drive. From "Godlessly," which sings of a zombie apocalypse, to "The Leather Apron's Scorn," drawn from Jack the Ripper, varied songs line up. Strnad's expressive roars and Ellis's brilliant guitar work drive the whole record. This proved to be the last album to feature him. Released at the peak of their maturity, it is one of the band's finest works.
