『Deflorate』は、高速ブラストと旋律的なギターを鋭く編み込み、THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDERの美学を磨き上げた第4作だ。ジョン・ケンパイネンに代わり、ARSIS出身のライアン・ナイトがギタリストとして加入した最初のアルバムであり、その卓越した速弾きとテクニックがバンドの表現力を新たな次元へと押し上げている。全米ビルボード200で43位に達し、バンドにとって初のチャート・インを果たした点でも、重要な一枚である。初週で約1万2千枚を売り上げ、ボーナスDVD『We're Going Places』を付属させた仕様でも話題を呼んだ。 先行して公開されたシングル“Necropolis”は、催眠的なメイン・リフと凶暴な展開を備えた代表曲だ。冒頭の“Black Valor”の疾走感、“A Selection Unnatural”の緊張感から、“I Will Return”のドラマ性まで、緩急に富んだ楽曲が並ぶ。トレヴァー・ストルナドの咆哮はさらに鋭さを増し、ナイトとブライアン・エシュバックのツイン・ギターが目まぐるしいハーモニーを描き続ける。技術と攻撃性を高い次元で両立させた、円熟への足掛かりとなる充実作である。

Deflorate is The Black Dahlia Murder's fourth album, on which they sharply wove high-speed blasts and melodic guitar to refine their aesthetic. It is the first album with guitarist Ryan Knight (ex-Arsis), who replaced John Kempainen, and his outstanding fast playing and technique push the band's expressive power to a new dimension. Reaching No. 43 on the US Billboard 200 — the band's first chart entry — it is an important record on that count as well. It sold about 12,000 copies in its first week and drew attention for a bonus-DVD edition, "We're Going Places." The advance single "Necropolis," with a hypnotic main riff and ferocious development, is a signature song. From the drive of the opener "Black Valor" and the tension of "A Selection Unnatural" to the drama of "I Will Return," songs full of shifting dynamics line up. Trevor Strnad's roars grow still sharper, and the twin guitars of Knight and Brian Eschbach keep drawing dizzying harmonies. Balancing technique and aggression at a high level, it is an accomplished work that became a foothold toward maturity.
