Mechanical Resonance

『Mechanical Resonance』は、TESLAが過剰な装飾よりも、ギター・リフの手触りとバンドの一体感を信じて作り上げたデビュー作だ。フランク・ハノンとトミー・スキオのギターは互いに押し引きし、ジェフ・キースの少し掠れた歌が曲に土臭い温度を与えている。発明家ニコラ・テスラにちなんだバンド名の通り、彼らは当時流行していた華美なグラム・メタルとは一線を画す、骨太で誠実なアメリカン・ハード・ロックを打ち出した。 “Modern Day Cowboy”の広がりや“Little Suzi”の切なさ、“EZ Come EZ Go”“Comin' Atcha Live”の勢いには、70年代ハード・ロックの感覚を80年代の会場へと持ち込む力がある。“2 Late 4 Love”“Rock Me to the Top”“Changes”といった楽曲にも、バンドの確かなメロディ・センスが息づいている。サクラメント出身の彼らは、ライヴ活動を通じて着実に評価を高め、本作でメジャー・デビューを果たした。なお“Little Suzi”は英国のバンドPh.D.のカヴァーであり、バンドの叙情的な魅力を伝えている。実直な演奏の中に印象的なフックを丁寧に置き、後のTESLAの音楽的な基盤を明確に示した本作は、80年代ハード・ロックの中でも独自の存在感を放つ、力強いデビュー作である。

Mechanical Resonance is the debut TESLA built by trusting the feel of the guitar riffs and the band’s cohesion over excessive ornament. Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch’s guitars push and pull against each other, and Jeff Keith’s slightly raspy singing gives the songs an earthy warmth. True to a band name derived from the inventor Nikola Tesla, they put forth a sturdy, sincere American hard rock, set apart from the flashy glam metal in fashion at the time. The breadth of “Modern Day Cowboy,” the ache of “Little Suzi,” and the momentum of “EZ Come EZ Go” and “Comin' Atcha Live” have the power to bring a 1970s hard-rock feel into 1980s venues. Songs like “2 Late 4 Love,” “Rock Me to the Top” and “Changes” breathe the band’s firm melodic sense too. Carefully placing memorable hooks within honest playing and clearly showing the musical foundation of later TESLA, it is a strong debut that radiates a distinct presence even within 1980s hard rock.
