Truth

『Truth』は、TALISMANがしなやかなベース、切れ味のよいギター、表情豊かなヴォーカルをまとめたメロディック・ハード・ロック作品だ。3年の空白を経て1998年に発表され、ポンタス・ノルグレン(のちにハンマーフォール)がギターに加わった最初の作品となる。ロサンゼルスで書かれた曲を小さなスタジオとソートの自宅スタジオで録り、ボストンのジョン・エリスの協力を得て仕上げられた。曲はファンクのように跳ねる場面と、力強く押し切る場面を自然に行き来する。 高い演奏力を持ちながらも、中心にあるのは歌えるメロディとグルーヴである。クイーンの“Let Me Entertain You”で幕を開け、プリンスの“Darling Nikki”、マドンナの“Frozen”とカヴァーを大胆に配したのも本作の特徴で、マドンナ曲はドイツのクラブで人気を集めたという。“In the End”や“Heaven's Got Another Hero”といったオリジナルも粒ぞろいで、締めの“Madison”まで緩みがない。本作もツアーは行われなかったが、これを機にスウェーデン・ロック・フェスへの出演が実現する。TALISMANの都会的で熱いロック感覚を味わえる一枚だ。

Truth is a melodic hard rock record assembling supple bass, sharp guitar and expressive vocals. Released in 1998 after a three-year silence, it's the first Talisman album with Pontus Norgren (later HammerFall) on guitar. Songs written in Los Angeles were recorded in a small studio and Soto's home studio, and finished with the help of John Ellis in Boston. The songs move naturally between passages that spring like funk and passages that push through with force. For all the playing ability, at the center are singable melody and groove. It opens with Queen's “Let Me Entertain You,” and boldly places Prince's “Darling Nikki” and Madonna's “Frozen” — the Madonna cover reportedly became popular in German clubs. Originals like “In the End” and “Heaven's Got Another Hero” are consistently strong, and it never slackens through to the closing “Madison.” No touring was done for this album either, but it led to their Sweden Rock Festival appearance. A record for savoring Talisman's urbane, hot rock sensibility.
