『Humanimal』は、TALISMANがハード・ロックの骨格にファンク、ソウル、ブルースの色を大胆に混ぜ込み、バンドの演奏力をグルーヴへ変えた第3作。1994年、ジェフ・スコット・ソート、マルセル・ヤコブ、フレドリック・オーケソン、ジェイミー・ボルガー(トリート)という黄金編成で、22曲を22日で録音・ミックスするという勢いのなかで作られた。曲数が多すぎたため市場ごとに異なる選曲で発売され、残りは『Part II』として世に出るという異例の経緯をたどっている。当時ツアーは一切行われなかった。 ソートのしなやかな歌とヤコブの跳ねるベースが曲を強く引っ張り、重量感のあるリフと軽快なリズムを自然に共存させる。技巧は常に曲の楽しさへ向かっている。“Colour My XTC”のファンク、“Fabricated War”の疾走、“Seasons”のうねり、50年代風の“Doin' Time wit' My Baby”まで振れ幅は大きい。単なるメロディック・ハードの枠に収まらず、各メンバーの個性が会話するように動くことで、躍動感と色彩の両方を手に入れた。バンド自身とファンが最も愛する、キャリア屈指の一枚である。

Humanimal is the third album, boldly mixing funk, soul and blues colors into hard rock's frame and converting the band's playing ability into groove. In 1994, with the golden lineup of Jeff Scott Soto, Marcel Jacob, Fredrik Åkesson and Jamie Borger (Treat), it was made in a rush that saw 22 songs recorded and mixed in 22 days. With too many songs, it was released with different selections per market, and the rest emerged as Part II — an unusual path. No touring was done at the time. Soto's supple singing and Jacob's springing bass pull the songs hard, letting weighty riffs and light rhythms coexist naturally. The technique always points toward the songs' enjoyment. The range is wide: the funk of “Colour My XTC,” the race of “Fabricated War,” the swell of “Seasons,” the '50s-styled “Doin' Time wit' My Baby.” Rather than fitting the melodic-hard frame, each member's individuality moves as if in conversation, gaining both dynamism and color. The album the band themselves and fans love most — a career highlight.
