Sunstorm

『Sunstorm』は、ジョー・リン・ターナーの力強く滑らかな歌声を中心に、きらびやかな鍵盤、厚いギター、洗練されたコーラスを組み合わせた作品だ。フロンティアーズの総帥セラフィーノ・ペルジーノが、ターナーの1985年のソロ作『Rescue You』に続くはずだった幻の第2作のデモに着目したことから、2006年にこのプロジェクトが動き出した。ピンク・クリーム69のデニス・ウォードがプロデュースとベースを担い、同バンドのウーヴェ・ライテナウアー(ギター)、クリス・シュミット(ドラム)、ヨッヘン・ヴァイヤー(キーボード)が脇を固める。 AORの温かさとハード・ロックの押し出しが自然に混ざり、曲は大きなメロディで聴き手を引き込む。元サヴァイヴァーのジム・ペテリックが新曲を提供し、“Keep Tonight”や“Fame and Fortune”では80年代の空気がそのまま現代に立ち上がる。ジャーニーやフォリナー、ナイト・レンジャーに連なる質感で、締めのバラード“Arms of Love”まで密度が落ちない。派手な技巧よりも歌の魅力とアレンジの上品さを大切にし、全体には豊かな余韻が残る。成熟したヴォーカルを味わうための、品格あるメロディック・ロック作品である。

Sunstorm combines glittering keyboards, thick guitar and refined choruses around Joe Lynn Turner's powerful, smooth voice. The project began in 2006 when Frontiers head Serafino Perugino focused on demos for the phantom second album that was to have followed Turner's 1985 solo record Rescue You. Pink Cream 69's Dennis Ward handled production and bass, with the same band's Uwe Reitenauer (guitar), Chris Schmidt (drums) and Jochen Weyer (keyboards) filling out the sides. AOR warmth and hard-rock push mix naturally, and the songs draw you in with big melody. Ex-Survivor's Jim Peterik supplied new tracks, and on “Keep Tonight” and “Fame and Fortune” the air of the '80s rises intact into the present. The texture connects to Journey, Foreigner and Night Ranger, and the density never drops through the closing ballad “Arms of Love.” Rather than flashy technique, it values the appeal of the singing and the elegance of the arrangements, leaving a rich afterglow throughout — a classy melodic rock record for savoring a mature voice.
