Afterlife

『Afterlife』は、ロニー・ロメロを新たな歌い手に迎え、SUNSTORMが従来のAOR的な滑らかさを保ちつつ、より硬質でパワフルなメロディック・メタルへ寄せた第6作だ。2021年3月にフロンティアーズから発表された。より重い方向を求めたジョー・リン・ターナーが去り、レインボーやロード・オヴ・ブラック、ザ・フェリーメンで知られるロメロが新たに加入した。ドラムはミケーレ・サンナに交代し、シモーネ・ムラローニ、アレッサンドロ・デル・ヴェッキオ、ニック・マッツコーニが残る。 彼の強い声量とドラマティックな節回しが、ギターと鍵盤の厚いアレンジに新しい推進力を与える。デル・ヴェッキオは初期作のメロディックな路線へ回帰させることを選び、その狙いが表題曲や先行シングル“Swan Song”に表れている。70年代寄りのハード・ロック感とAORが交わる質感は、レインボーで歌ってきたロメロの経歴とも自然に噛み合う。過去の柔らかな魅力を完全に捨てるのではなく、それをより重いリフや大きなサビと結び付けるのが面白い。長い歴史と期待を背負いながら、プロジェクトの新章を明確に示した、力強くもメロディを大切にした一枚だ。

Afterlife is the sixth album, bringing in Ronnie Romero as the new singer and leaning toward harder, more powerful melodic metal while keeping the smoothness of the old AOR. Released on Frontiers in March 2021. Joe Lynn Turner, who wanted a heavier direction, departed, and Romero — known from Rainbow, Lords of Black and The Ferrymen — newly joined. Michele Sanna took over on drums, with Simone Mularoni, Alessandro Del Vecchio and Nik Mazzucconi remaining. His strong volume and dramatic phrasing give new drive to the dense guitar-and-keyboard arrangements. Del Vecchio chose to steer back to the melodic path of the early records, and that aim shows in the title track and the advance single “Swan Song.” The texture where '70s-leaning hard rock crosses AOR meshes naturally with Romero's résumé singing in Rainbow. What's interesting is that it doesn't fully abandon the old softer appeal but ties it to heavier riffs and bigger choruses. Carrying long history and expectation, it clearly marks a new chapter — powerful yet careful with melody.
