Ultrapower

『Ultrapower』は、2024年2月2日に出た第7作で、五年分の書き溜めをまとめた一枚である。プロデュースはジョシュ・シュローダー——ローナ・ショアやキング810を手がけた人物。ギターにはジョン・サイモン・ファロンが加わった。そしてこの盤は、ファンの金で出ている。彼らはキックスターターを回し、3万ドルの階層に滑り込んだ。バンドの言葉によれば、その支援が「独立したバンドであり続けることを可能にした」。 中身は雑食である。“Circle of Evil”は秘密結社を歌うマルムスティーン風の疾走曲、“Blood Magic”はキング・ダイアモンドを引いた変則構成で彼らの最も進歩的な曲、“City Calling”は1987年へのオマージュでトトやケニー・ロギンスの側へ寄り、“Live to Fight Another Day”は初のシンセウェイヴ曲——「ずっと好きだったが、自分でやる度胸がなかった」。詞についてバンドはこう説明する。存在しない映画のためのモンタージュ曲、そして自分たちの落ちていく隷属についての歌だ、と。本作は3年連続となるJUNO賞ノミネートを受け、デヴィン・タウンゼンドやスピリットボックスと並んだ。

Ultrapower, the seventh album, came out on 2 February 2024 and gathers five years of writing. Josh Schroeder produced — the man behind Lorna Shore and King 810 records — and John Simon Fallon came in on guitar. The record exists on its listeners' money: they ran a Kickstarter and slipped into the 30K tier, and by the band's account that support gave them the ability to continue as an independent band. What is on it is omnivorous. "Circle of Evil" is a Malmsteen-shaped runner about secret societies; "Blood Magic" borrows from King Diamond and is, structurally, their most progressive song; "City Calling" is an ode to 1987 that leans toward Toto and Kenny Loggins; "Live to Fight Another Day" is their first synthwave track — they had always liked it, they said, and never had the guts to try it. On the lyrics the band are direct: montage songs for films that do not exist, and songs about their own spiralling serfdom. It brought a third consecutive JUNO nomination, alongside Devin Townsend and Spiritbox.
