『Stones Grow Her Name』は、SONATA ARCTICAが、メロディック・パワー・メタルの、あの疾走感を基盤としながらも、フォーク的な旋律、アコースティックな要素、そして、プログレッシヴな転調とを、大胆に加えた、意欲的な作品だ。前2作での、実験的な路線を、より多彩で、開かれた方向へと発展させている。従来の、あのスピード感を、しっかりと保ちながらも、曲ごとに、全く異なる景色を作ろうとする、その旺盛な意欲が、はっきりと見える。バンドの、幅広い音楽性が光る一枚だ。 冒頭を飾る、キャッチーな“Only the Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful)”の力強さ、そして“Losing My Insanity”のドラマ性、さらに“I Have a Right”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。ユーモラスな“Shitload of Money”、そして“Somewhere Close to You”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。大きく歌えるサビと、少し実験的なアレンジとが共存し、アルバムには、独特の旅情がある。 より多彩で、自由な表現へと踏み込みながらも、SONATA ARCTICAならではの、あるメロディの強さは、少しも失われていない一枚だ。バンドの変化と、その確かなメロディ・センスとを、同時に味わうことができる。フォークやポップの要素をも取り込んだ、その柔軟な作風が魅力の、聴き応えのある意欲作と言える。バンドの幅広さが光る一枚だ。

Stones Grow Her Name is an ambitious work on which Sonata Arctica, while keeping melodic power metal’s speed as its foundation, boldly adds folk melody, acoustic elements and progressive modulation. It develops the experimental direction of the previous two albums into a more varied, open direction. While firmly keeping the former speed, its vigorous drive to create wholly different scenery in each song is clearly visible. A record where the band’s broad musicality shines. From the power of the catchy opener “Only the Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful)” and the drama of “Losing My Insanity” to a cut like “I Have a Right,” every song is engaging, while the humorous “Shitload of Money” and a cut like “Somewhere Close to You” convey the work’s fullness. Big, singable choruses and slightly experimental arrangement coexist, and the album has a distinctive sense of travel. A record on which, while stepping into a more varied, free expression, Sonata Arctica’s own melodic strength is not lost in the least. You can savor both the band’s change and its sure melodic sense at once. An engaging, ambitious work whose appeal is the flexible style, also taking in folk and pop elements — a record where the band’s breadth shines.
