Sworn to a Great Divide

『Sworn to a Great Divide』は、SOILWORKが低く刻むリフ、電子的な処理、ビョーン・“スピード”・ストリッドの多彩な歌をまとめ上げた作品だ。激しいパートとクリーンなメロディの切り替えが、曲に大きな引力を与えている。前作までに培ったモダンなメロディック・デスを、さらに推し進めた一枚である。 表題曲“Sworn to a Great Divide”や“Exile”“Breeding Thorns”“20 More Miles”といった楽曲では、攻撃性とキャッチーさが拮抗している。“I, Vermin”“Silent Bullet”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した表現力が息づいている。“The Pittsburgh Syndrome”“Light Discovering Darkness”“Sick Heart River”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作を最後にギタリストのピーター・ウィカースが一時バンドを離れることになるが、現代的な感覚と叙情が見事に融合した、バンドの円熟期を予感させる充実の一枚である。メタルコア的な現代感と、イェーテボリ由来の叙情的な旋律を巧みに結び付けている。重さとメロディを高い次元で両立させた本作は、バンドの充実を伝える、聴き応えのある一枚である。

Sworn to a Great Divide is a work on which SOILWORK brought together low chugging riffs, electronic processing and the varied singing of Björn “Speed” Strid. The switching between fierce parts and clean melody gives the songs great pull. It is a record that pushed the modern melodic death cultivated up to the previous album even further. On the title track “Sworn to a Great Divide” and “Exile,” “Breeding Thorns” and “20 More Miles,” aggression and catchiness stand in balance. Songs like “I, Vermin” and “Silent Bullet” breathe the band’s full expressiveness too. It skillfully binds a metalcore-like modernity with lyrical, Gothenburg-derived melody. Balancing weight and melody at a high level, it is a rewarding record conveying the band’s fullness.
