『Ritual』は、SHAMANがドラマティックなキーボード、疾走するギター、表情豊かなハイトーン・ヴォーカルを用いて、壮大な物語を描いたデビュー作だ。2000年にアングラを離れたアンドレ・マトス(ヴォーカル/ピアノ)、ルイス・マリウッチ(ベース)、ヒカルド・コンフェソーリ(ドラム)が、ルイスの弟ウーゴ・マリウッチ(ギター)を迎えて結成した。バンド名はマトスがアングラの『Holy Land』に書いた曲“The Shaman”に由来する。2002年、全編ドイツで録音され、アングラも手がけたサッシャ・ピートがプロデュースした。 シャーマニズムと先住民の文化を主題にしたコンセプト作で、クラシカルな要素とブラジルらしいリズム感が同居し、曲には独特の熱気がある。大きなコーラスと細かなアレンジが、作品に舞台劇のような広がりを与える。“Over Your Head”にはデレク・シェリニアンとマーカス・ヴィアナ、締めの“Pride”にはトビアス・サメットがゲスト参加した。世界50万枚を超える売上を記録し、15か国以上で発売。約1年半に及ぶツアーで150公演以上をこなした。情熱的でメロディ重視のパワー・メタルを求める人に響く一枚だ。

Ritual is the debut on which Shaman drew a grand story using dramatic keyboards, racing guitar and expressive high-register vocals. Andre Matos (vocals/piano), Luis Mariutti (bass) and Ricardo Confessori (drums), who left Angra in 2000, formed it with Luis's younger brother Hugo Mariutti (guitar). The band name comes from “The Shaman,” a song Matos wrote for Angra's Holy Land. Recorded entirely in Germany in 2002 and produced by Sascha Paeth, who had also worked with Angra. A concept album on shamanism and indigenous cultures, it holds classical elements alongside a Brazilian rhythmic sense, and the songs carry a distinctive heat. Big choruses and detailed arrangements give the record the expanse of stage drama. Derek Sherinian and Marcus Viana guest on “Over Your Head,” and Tobias Sammet on the closing “Pride.” It sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide and was released in over 15 countries, with a tour of roughly a year and a half covering over 150 shows. A record that resonates with anyone wanting passionate, melody-first power metal.
