『VOA』は、サミー・ヘイガーが持つ豪快な歌声と、テッド・テンプルマンによる引き締まったプロダクションを結び付けた第8作だ。太いギター・リフと軽快なビートは、曲をコンパクトに前へ進めながら、ヴォーカルの開放感を最大限に生かしている。ソロ期の一つの頂点を刻んだ作品である。 彼の代名詞ともなった“I Can't Drive 55”の反射的な勢いは、シンプルなメッセージと強烈なフックで、聴き手を一気に掴む。“Two Sides of Love”のメロディ、表題曲“VOA”の推進力、そして“Rock Is in My Blood”の熱気まで、アルバム全体にはアメリカン・ハード・ロックらしい明るさが満ちている。 無駄をそぎ落とした曲作りと、引き締まった演奏が、サミーのヴォーカルの魅力を最大限に引き出している。派手な装飾よりも、フックの強さとスピード感で勝負した点が心地よい。“Swept Away”“Burnin' Down the City”のような曲でも、太いリフと軽快なビートが結び付き、作品に一貫した推進力を与えている。テッド・テンプルマンによる引き締まった音作りが、全編で効果的に機能している。後にVAN HALENへ加わる直前の、ソロ・アーティストとしての充実と強さが詰まった、勢いのある一枚と言える。

VOA is the eighth album on which Sammy Hagar binds his bold voice to Ted Templeman’s tightened production. Thick guitar riffs and light beats move the songs compactly forward while making the most of the vocal’s openness. It marks one peak of his solo era. The reflexive drive of “I Can’t Drive 55,” which became his signature, grabs the listener all at once with a simple message and a powerful hook. From the melody of “Two Sides of Love” and the drive of the title track “VOA” to the heat of “Rock Is in My Blood,” the whole album is full of an American-hard-rock brightness. Writing stripped of the excess and tightened playing draw out the appeal of Sammy’s vocals to the fullest. It feels good that it wins on the strength of the hooks and a sense of speed rather than flashy decoration. It is a spirited record packed with a solo artist’s fullness and strength, just before he joined Van Halen.
