Space Between

『Space Between』は、サミー・ヘイガー＆ザ・サークル名義では初のスタジオ作で、ハード・ロックの勢い、ブルースの柔らかさ、そして人生を見渡すような歌を、一つにまとめた作品だ。サミーの快活な声を中心に、マイケル・アンソニー、ジェイソン・ボーナム、ヴィック・ジョンソンの演奏が、大らかで力強いグルーヴを作り出している。 冒頭“Devil Came to Philly”の勢い、“Wide Open Space”の広がり、“Free Man”のメロディ、そして“Trust Fund Baby”まで、収録曲は充実したロックンロールを聴かせる。特に“Trust Fund Baby”のような曲には社会への鋭い視線もあるが、決して説教臭くはならず、リフの力強さと、仲間と演奏する純粋な喜びが常に前面に出ている。 ベテランならではの余裕を、衰えではなく、むしろ解放感として聴かせる点が、本作の大きな魅力だ。腕利きのメンバーが生み出す一体感のあるグルーヴと、サミーの伸びやかな歌声が見事に噛み合っている。“Can't Hang”“No Worries”のような曲でも、腕利きのメンバーによる一体感のあるグルーヴが、作品に一貫した力強さを与えている。豪快なロックと、人生への大らかな眼差しが同居した、力強く充実したバンド作品と言える。

Space Between is the first studio album under the name Sammy Hagar & the Circle, pulling together hard rock’s drive, the softness of blues and a life-surveying song into one. Around Sammy’s lively voice, the playing of Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson creates a generous, powerful groove. From the drive of the opener “Devil Came to Philly” and the spaciousness of “Wide Open Space” to the melody of “Free Man” and “Trust Fund Baby,” the songs deliver fulfilling rock and roll. A song like “Trust Fund Baby” in particular holds a sharp social gaze, yet it never turns preachy, and the strength of the riffs and the pure joy of playing with friends are always to the fore. Its great appeal is that it sounds a veteran’s ease not as decline but as a sense of release. The unified groove created by skilled members and Sammy’s soaring voice mesh beautifully. Uniting bold rock and a generous gaze on life, it is a powerful, fulfilling band record.
