Roll the Bones

『Roll the Bones』は、RUSHが80年代のシンセサイザー中心の設計から明確に離れ、アレックス・ライフソンのギターと、三人によるアンサンブルを、改めて力強く前面に押し出した第14作だ。ゲディー・リーのベースと声、そしてニール・パートの精密なドラムは、複雑さを誇るためではなく、あくまで曲を軽快に、そして推進力を持って進めるために働いている。前作『Presto』での方向性を、さらに推し進めた一枚である。 冒頭“Dreamline”の爽快な推進力、美しいバラード“Bravado”、そして偶然性や運命をテーマにした表題曲“Roll the Bones”では、ラップ的な語りや、ファンクの感触までもが、バンドの新たな遊び心として、実に自然に溶け込んでいる。“Ghost of a Chance”の叙情、インストの“Where's My Thing?”の技巧も光る。 高度な技術、知的なユーモア、そしてポップで開かれた推進力とを、見事に同居させている点が本作の大きな魅力だ。深刻になりすぎず、ロックを演奏する純粋な楽しさが全編にあふれている。商業的にも成功を収め、90年代のRUSHの、軽やかで充実した入口となった、親しみやすい一枚と言える。

Roll the Bones is the fourteenth album on which Rush clearly steps away from the synthesizer-centered design of the 1980s and again powerfully pushes Alex Lifeson’s guitar and the three-member ensemble to the fore. Geddy Lee’s bass and voice and Neil Peart’s precise drums work to move the songs lightly and with drive, rather than to boast complexity. It pushes the direction of the previous Presto further. In the brisk drive of the opener “Dreamline,” the beautiful ballad “Bravado” and the title track “Roll the Bones,” themed on chance and fate, rap-like narration and even a funk feel blend in very naturally as the band’s new playfulness, while the lyricism of “Ghost of a Chance” and the technique of the instrumental “Where’s My Thing?” also shine. Its great appeal is beautifully uniting high technique, intelligent humor and a pop, open drive. Without becoming too serious, the pure fun of playing rock overflows throughout. Achieving commercial success too, becoming a light, fulfilling entry into 1990s Rush, it is an accessible record.
