Counterparts

『Counterparts』は、RUSHが持ち前の複雑な演奏技術を保ちながらも、より乾いたギター、太く力強いリズム、そして直接的な歌へと、その重心を大きく移した、90年代の重要作だ。シンセサイザーの比重を大幅に抑え、ギター、ベース、ドラムの、生々しく硬質な骨格を、これまで以上に前面へと打ち出している。バンドが、よりヘヴィでロックな方向へと回帰した一枚である。 アレックス・ライフソンのギターは、細かな装飾を減らしながらも、和音と質感によって、曲に深い奥行きを作り出している。冒頭“Animate”の重い推進力、シングル“Stick It Out”の攻撃性、社会的なテーマを持つ“Nobody's Hero”、そしてインストの名曲“Leave That Thing Alone”まで、収録曲はいずれも力強い。 プログレッシヴな発想を決して捨てることなく、音の情報を巧みに整理することで、ロックとしての生々しい身体性を、力強く取り戻している点に、本作の大きな意義がある。成熟期のRUSHにおける、重要な転換点となった一枚だ。複雑な拍子だけでなく、ギターの効果的な空白と、リズム隊が生み出す低く重い重心を、じっくりと味わいたい充実作と言える。

Counterparts is an important 1990s album on which Rush, while keeping its native complex technique, greatly shifts its weight toward drier guitar, thick, powerful rhythm and direct singing. Greatly restraining the weight of synthesizers, it puts the raw, hard frame of guitar, bass and drums to the fore more than before. A record on which the band returns to a heavier, more rock direction. Alex Lifeson’s guitar, while reducing fine decoration, creates deep depth through chords and texture. From the heavy drive of the opener “Animate” and the aggression of the single “Stick It Out” to the socially themed “Nobody’s Hero” and the classic instrumental “Leave That Thing Alone,” every song is powerful. Its great significance lies in powerfully recovering the raw physicality of rock by deftly organizing the sonic information, while never abandoning progressive thinking. It is an important turning point in mature Rush. Beyond complex meters, it is a fulfilling record to savor for the effective space of the guitar and the low, heavy center the rhythm section creates.
