『Power Windows』は、RUSHがギター・ロックの骨格を残しながらも、キーボードとエレクトロニックな質感を、これまでで最も大胆に、そして華やかに広げた第11作だ。ゲディー・リーのベース、アレックス・ライフソンのギター、そしてニール・パートのドラムは、非常に複雑でありながら、曲の力強い流れを決して止めることがない。オーケストラも導入され、作品はより壮大で洗練された音像を獲得している。 冒頭を飾るヒット曲“The Big Money”の圧倒的な推進力、そして“Marathon”の高揚感は、高度な演奏技術を、大きく開かれたメロディへと見事に結び付ける、RUSHの類まれな強さを示している。“Manhattan Project”“Territories”“Mystic Rhythms”のような曲も、知的なテーマと洗練されたサウンドを両立させている。 80年代らしい、きらびやかな音色を大胆に取り込みつつも、トリオならではの、張り詰めた緊張感と一体感を、しっかりと保っている点が本作の大きな魅力だ。プロデューサーの手腕もあり、細部まで作り込まれた音作りは圧巻である。技術と洗練が高い次元で結実した、80年代RUSHを代表する、力強く華やかな一枚と言える。

Power Windows is the eleventh album on which Rush, while keeping the frame of guitar rock, widens keyboards and electronic textures in its most bold and flamboyant way yet. Geddy Lee’s bass, Alex Lifeson’s guitar and Neil Peart’s drums, while very complex, never stop the songs’ powerful flow, and with an orchestra introduced, the work gains a grander, more refined sound. The overwhelming drive of the opening hit “The Big Money” and the lift of “Marathon” show Rush’s rare strength in beautifully binding high technique to widely open melody, while cuts like “Manhattan Project,” “Territories” and “Mystic Rhythms” unite intelligent themes and a refined sound. Its great appeal is that, while boldly taking in glittering 1980s timbres, it firmly keeps the taut tension and unity particular to a trio. Owing partly to the producer’s skill, the sound crafted to the details is stunning. Bringing technique and refinement to fruition at a high level, it is a powerful, flamboyant record representative of 1980s Rush.
