『Hold Your Fire』は、RUSHが80年代を通して磨き上げてきたシンセサイザーの豊かな質感と、三人による精密な演奏とを、極めて高い密度で組み合わせた、プログレッシヴな作品だ。アレックス・ライフソンのギターは、必要な場面で的確に曲の輪郭を与え、ゲディー・リーの声とベース、そしてニール・パートの複雑なリズムが、楽曲の細部を緻密に支えている。バンドのシンセサイザー路線の、一つの到達点と言える一枚である。 冒頭“Force Ten”の力強い推進力や、ゲスト・ヴォーカルを迎えた“Time Stand Still”の浮遊感は、楽曲が単なる技術の見せ場ではなく、豊かな感情の流れとして、丁寧に組み立てられていることを示している。“Mission”の壮大さ、“Prime Mover”“Lock and Key”のドラマ性も印象的だ。 内省的で知的なテーマ性と、壮大で広がりのあるスケール感とを、見事に両立させている点が本作の魅力だ。演奏の緻密さは、キャリアでも屈指のものである。1987年という時代の中にあっても、独自の際立った輪郭を保ち続けた、探究心あふれる後期80年代の重要作と言える。バンドの円熟を示す一枚だ。

Hold Your Fire is a progressive work on which Rush combines, at extremely high density, the rich synthesizer textures it honed through the 1980s and the three members’ precise playing. Alex Lifeson’s guitar accurately gives the songs their outline where needed, and Geddy Lee’s voice and bass and Neil Peart’s complex rhythm precisely support the songs’ details. A record that can be called one peak of the band’s synthesizer direction. The powerful drive of the opener “Force Ten” and the floating feel of “Time Stand Still,” which features a guest vocal, show that the songs are carefully built as rich emotional flows, not mere technical showcases, while the grandeur of “Mission” and the drama of “Prime Mover” and “Lock and Key” are also striking. Its appeal is beautifully uniting introspective, intelligent themes and a grand, expansive scale. The precision of the playing is among the finest in its career. Keeping its own distinct outline even amid 1987, it is an important late-1980s work full of inquiry — a record showing the band’s maturity.
