『Grace Under Pressure』は、RUSHがシンセサイザーの比重をさらに高めながらも、三人だけが生み出す鋭いアンサンブルを、いっそう研ぎ澄ませた第10作だ。ゲディー・リーのベースと鍵盤、アレックス・ライフソンの空間を鋭く切り裂くギター、そしてニール・パートの精密なドラムが、極めて緊迫した、冷たい景色を描き出していく。タイトルが示す通り、重圧の下での気高さがテーマの一枚である。 冒頭“Distant Early Warning”の切迫感から、冷戦の恐怖やホロコーストを想起させる、重く沈んだ影を持つ“Red Sector A”まで、収録曲は80年代初頭の、社会に漂う不安を、そのまま音へと変えている。“The Body Electric”のドラマ性、“Afterimage”の叙情も、作品に深い陰影を与えている。 技術的な見せ場だけに頼るのではなく、緻密な音色の選択と、練り込まれた曲構成によって、聴き手の心に深い余韻を残す点が本作の魅力だ。ニュー・ウェイヴやエレクトロニックな要素を大胆に取り込みつつも、RUSHらしい知的な緊張感は健在である。バンドの、より暗く内省的な側面を色濃く映し出した、意欲的で重厚な一枚と言える。

Grace Under Pressure is the tenth album on which Rush, while further raising the weight of synthesizers, honed even more the sharp ensemble the three alone create. Geddy Lee’s bass and keyboards, Alex Lifeson’s guitar sharply cutting space and Neil Peart’s precise drums draw an extremely tense, cold scenery. As the title suggests, it is a record themed on nobility under pressure. From the urgency of the opener “Distant Early Warning” to “Red Sector A,” with its heavy, sunken shadow evoking Cold War fear and the Holocaust, the songs turn the unease drifting through early-1980s society directly into sound, while the drama of “The Body Electric” and the lyricism of “Afterimage” give it deep shading. Its appeal is leaving a deep afterglow in the listener’s heart through precise choices of timbre and worked-out song construction, rather than relying on technical showcases. Boldly taking in new wave and electronic elements, its intelligent, Rush-like tension is intact. Strongly reflecting the band’s darker, more introspective side, it is an ambitious, weighty record.
