『Triumph or Agony』は、RHAPSODY OF FIREが、オーケストラ、荘厳な合唱、シンフォニックで華麗な鍵盤、そして疾走するギターとを結び付け、壮大なファンタジー世界を描いた、充実の作品だ。バンド名を、それまでの「ラプソディー」から、この「RHAPSODY OF FIRE」へと改名して発表された、最初のアルバムにあたる。ルカ・トゥリッリと、アレックス・スタロポリの、緻密に作り込まれた音像は、速いメタルの、確かな勢いを保ちながらも、まるで映画のような、壮大な広がりを生み出している。「ダーク・シークレット・サーガ」の物語が、さらに進行する一枚だ。 冒頭“Dar-Kunor”から、劇的な表題曲“Triumph or Agony”、そして“Heart of the Darklands”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Old Age of Wonders”、そして、美しいイタリア語のバラード“Il Canto del Vento”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。クリストファー・リーの、荘厳なナレーションも、その世界観を、力強く彩っている。 各楽曲は、まるで、壮大な物語の、一つの場面のように展開し、歌声や、楽器の、豊かな重なりが、そのドラマを、いっそう高めていく一枚だ。その過剰さを、決して恐れることのない、徹底した姿勢そのものが、大きな魅力となっている。シンフォニック・パワー・メタルの、その醍醐味を凝縮した、力強く聴き応えのある大作と言える。バンドの壮大な世界観が光る一枚だ。

Triumph or Agony is a fulfilling work on which Rhapsody of Fire, binding orchestra, solemn choirs, symphonic, gorgeous keyboards and speeding guitar, draws a grand fantasy world. It is the first album released after the band renamed from the previous “Rhapsody” to this “Rhapsody of Fire.” The precisely crafted sound Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli create, while keeping fast metal’s sure momentum, generates a grand, cinematic expanse. A record on which the story of the “Dark Secret Saga” advances further.
