『Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow』は、リッチー・ブラックモアとロニー・ジェイムス・ディオが、幻想性と重厚なリフを結び付けたRAINBOWの出発点だ。DEEP PURPLEを離れたブラックモアが、ELFのディオらとともに録音した記念すべきデビュー作である。バンド名は、ブラックモアが通ったサンセット・ストリップの店「Rainbow Bar & Grill」に由来する。初期の演奏メンバーは、ディオが在籍していたバンドELFのメンバーが中心を占めていた。 “Man on the Silver Mountain”“Catch the Rainbow”“The Temple of the King”といった、多彩な楽曲が並ぶ。ディオの神話的な歌詞と、ブラックモアの様式美あふれるギターが、早くも独自の世界観を築いている。ハード・ロックを基調としつつ、中世的で幻想的な空気を色濃く漂わせた。後のRAINBOWとディオの活躍を予感させる、優れた出発点である。“Man on the Silver Mountain”は、ディオを象徴する初期の名曲として、今なお長く歌い継がれている一曲だ。

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is Rainbow's starting point, on which Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio tied fantasy to heavy riffs. It is the memorable debut, recorded by Blackmore, who had left Deep Purple, together with Dio and others from Elf. The band's name comes from the "Rainbow Bar & Grill," a spot on the Sunset Strip that Blackmore frequented. The initial performing lineup was made up largely of members of Elf, the band Dio had belonged to. Varied songs like "Man on the Silver Mountain," "Catch the Rainbow" and "The Temple of the King" line up. Dio's mythic lyrics and Blackmore's stylized guitar already build a distinctive worldview. While rooted in hard rock, it strongly carries a medieval, fantastical atmosphere. An excellent starting point, foreshadowing the later success of Rainbow and Dio. "Man on the Silver Mountain" has long been sung as an early signature song emblematic of Dio.
