Black Sun

『Black Sun』は、PRIMAL FEARが、切れ味のある鋭いリフ、重く力強いリズム、そして突き抜けるような高音ヴォーカルを武器に、硬派な正統派パワー・メタルを、さらに磨き上げた作品だ。前作『Nuclear Fire』での充実を受け継ぎ、その音楽性を、より力強く推し進めている。タイトルや、歌詞には、宇宙的な、SF的なイメージを感じさせる曲も多いが、その核にあるのは、あくまで、シンプルで力強い、メタルの推進力である。 冒頭“Countdown to Insanity”から表題曲“Black Sun”へと至る展開、そして“Armageddon”の攻撃性、さらに“Revolution”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Lightyears from Home”“Mind Control”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。ラルフ・シーパースの、あの圧倒的なハイトーンが、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 疾走する速い曲の、張り詰めた緊張感と、歌メロを、大きく広げていく曲との、その鮮やかな対比が実に良い一枚だ。派手な装飾に頼るのではなく、あくまで、力強く、迷いなく前へと進む、PRIMAL FEARならではの、確かな魅力が詰まっている。初期の充実期を象徴する、力強く聴き応えのあるパワー・メタル作品と言える。バンドの一貫した姿勢が光る一枚だ。

Black Sun is a work on which Primal Fear, with sharp riffs, heavy, powerful rhythm and piercing high vocals, further hones tough traditional power metal. Inheriting the fullness of the previous Nuclear Fire, it pushes its musicality more powerfully. There are many songs whose title and lyrics evoke cosmic, sci-fi images, yet at their core is a simple, powerful metal drive. From the development from the opener “Countdown to Insanity” to the title track “Black Sun” and the aggression of “Armageddon” to a cut like “Revolution,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Lightyears from Home” and “Mind Control” convey the work’s fullness. Ralf Scheepers’s overwhelming highs are powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record whose vivid contrast of the taut tension of speeding fast songs and songs that widely open the vocal melody is truly good. Rather than relying on flashy decoration, it is packed with Primal Fear’s own sure appeal of moving powerfully forward without hesitation.
