Metal Magic

『Metal Magic』は、PANTERAが後年の激烈なグルーヴ・メタルとは異なる、グラム・メタルの派手さを軸に鳴らしたデビュー作だ。若きダイムバッグ・ダレルとヴィニー・ポールのアボット兄弟を中心に、当時のヴォーカリスト、テリー・グレイズが華やかな歌を乗せている。1983年という時代の空気を色濃く映した、バンドの原点である。 派手な様式に彩られているが、ダイムバッグ・ダレルのギターにはすでに非凡な才能の片鱗が見え隠れしている。後にバンドが到達する破壊的なヘヴィネスからは想像しにくいものの、演奏の熱量と若い勢いはまっすぐに伝わってくる。バンド自身は後にこの初期作を公式ディスコグラフィから外しているが、その歩みを知る上では興味深い一枚だ。伝説の始まりを、別の角度から確認できる作品である。1983年、テキサス州出身の若きバンドは地元のレーベル、メタル・マジック・レコードから本作を自主制作した。当時のPANTERAはモトリー・クルーやキッスといったバンドに影響を受けた典型的なグラム／ヘヴィ・メタル・バンドであり、後年のイメージとはあまりに異なるため長らく入手困難な幻の作品ともなっている。バンドの知られざる出発点を伝える貴重な記録だ。

Metal Magic is the debut on which PANTERA sounded, centered on glam-metal flamboyance different from the later ferocious groove metal. Centered on the young Abbott brothers, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, then-vocalist Terry Glaze lays flashy singing over it. It is the band’s origin, strongly reflecting the air of 1983. Though colored by a flamboyant style, glimpses of Dimebag Darrell’s extraordinary talent already flicker in his guitar. It is hard to imagine from the destructive heaviness the band would later reach, but the heat of the playing and youthful momentum come across directly. The band itself later removed this early work from its official discography, but it is an intriguing record for knowing their path. It is a work on which the start of a legend can be confirmed from another angle.
