『Bark at the Moon』は、ランディ・ローズの悲劇的な死を乗り越え、オジー・オズボーンが新ギタリストのジェイク・E・リーを迎えて再始動を果たした第3作だ。かつてRATTやROUGH CUTTに在籍したリーは、ローズとは異なるアグレッシヴでテクニカルなプレイを持ち込み、バンドの音楽性に新たな色彩を加えた。ボブ・デイズリー（ベース）、トミー・アルドリッジ（ドラム）を擁し、80年代的な華やかさと重厚さを併せ持つサウンドで、喪失を経たバンドの力強い再出発を印象づけている。 疾走する表題曲“Bark at the Moon”は、狼男に扮したオジーによる初のMVでも知られる代表曲となり、リーの鋭いリフとソロが強い存在感を放つ。哀愁漂うバラッド“So Tired”や、反骨精神みなぎる“Rock ’n’ Roll Rebel”、荘厳な“Centre of Eternity”、そして劇的に幕を閉じる終曲“Waiting for Darkness”まで、緩急に富んだ構成が全編を彩る。全米で発売後まもなくゴールドを獲得し、最終的に300万枚を超えるセールスを記録した本作は、ゴシックな世界観と80年代型メタルの高揚を結び付け、ローズ以後のオジー・バンドの方向性を確立した。新体制でも第一線であり続けることを高らかに証明した充実作である。

Bark at the Moon is the third album on which Ozzy Osbourne restarted after the tragic death of Randy Rhoads, bringing in new guitarist Jake E. Lee. Formerly of Ratt and Rough Cutt, Lee brought an aggressive, technical style different from Rhoads’s, adding fresh color to the band’s music. With Bob Daisley (bass) and Tommy Aldridge (drums), the sound combines 1980s glamour and heaviness, marking the band’s forceful new start after loss. The racing title track “Bark at the Moon,” known for Ozzy’s first music video in werewolf makeup, became a signature song where Lee’s sharp riffs and solos make a strong impression. From the wistful ballad “So Tired” to the defiant “Rock ’n’ Roll Rebel,” the stately “Centre of Eternity” and the dramatic closer “Waiting for Darkness,” a set full of shifting dynamics colors the whole record. Certified gold soon after release in the US and eventually selling over three million copies, it joins a gothic atmosphere to 1980s-metal exhilaration and established the direction of the post-Rhoads Ozzy band, proudly proving it could remain at the front line under a new lineup.
