The 8th Sin

『The 8th Sin』は、力強い歌と緻密なリフで、NOCTURNAL RITESが正統派メロディック・メタルを引き締めた第8作だ。これまでよりもややモダンなサウンドを取り入れ、鋭いリフと大きなコーラス、そしてハードロック的な要素を融合させている。タイトルは、七つの大罪になぞらえた「8番目の罪」を意味する遊び心から名付けられた。 冒頭の“Call Out to the World”や、ビデオも作られた“Never Again”は、荘厳なアンセムだ。ピアノ・バラードの“Me”では、ヨニー・リンドクヴィストが情感豊かに歌い上げる。“Pain & Pleasure”にはMESHUGGAHのイェンス・キドマンがスクリームでゲスト参加している。本作はニルス・ノーバーグがギターに参加した最後のアルバムであり、彼は翌2008年にバンドを去った。この後バンドは約10年の長い活動休止に入ることになる、一つの区切りの一枚である。バンドが再び動き出すのは、2017年の復活作『Phoenix』を待つことになる。鋭いリフと大きなコーラス、そしてハードロックの旨みが同居する、リンドクヴィスト期における一つの到達点だ。

The 8th Sin is Nocturnal Rites' eighth album, on which they tightened up orthodox melodic metal with powerful vocals and intricate riffs. Taking in a somewhat more modern sound than before, they fuse sharp riffs, big choruses and hard-rock elements. The title comes from a playful idea of an "eighth sin" alongside the seven deadly sins. The opener "Call Out to the World" and "Never Again," which got a video, are majestic anthems. On the piano ballad "Me," Jonny Lindkvist sings with rich emotion. "Pain & Pleasure" features a guest scream by Meshuggah's Jens Kidman. It is the last album to feature Nils Norberg on guitar; he left the band the following year, in 2008. A record that marks a turning point, after which the band would enter a long hiatus of about ten years. The band would not stir again until the 2017 comeback album Phoenix. Where sharp riffs, big choruses and hard-rock flavor coexist, it is a high point of the Lindkvist era.
