『Phoenix』は、NOCTURNAL RITESが北欧メロディック・メタルの爽快感を、硬いリフと厚いコーラスで力強く磨き上げた作品だ。ヨニー・リンドクヴィストの抜けの良いヴォーカルは、ツイン・ギターと鍵盤が作る鮮やかな背景の中でも輪郭を失わず、曲ごとの高揚感をまっすぐに引き上げる。速いビート、重厚なミドルテンポ、大きく開くサビが整然と配置され、アルバム全体に明確な推進力がある。 本作は、ただ明るいだけのパワー・メタルではない。リフには適度な陰りと硬さがあり、メロディには切なさを残すため、曲は華やかでも軽くなりすぎない。ギター・ソロやキーボードのフレーズも、装飾のためではなく、次のコーラスへ向かう熱量を高めるために働く。各パートの役割が分かりやすく、それでいて一曲ごとの表情に細かな変化がある。 音量を上げればドラムのキックとギターのアタックが心地よく前へ出て、繰り返し聴けばコーラスの下で動く鍵盤やリフの受け渡しが見えてくる。NOCTURNAL RITESが長く培ってきたメロディ感覚と演奏の安定感を、現在形の音像で示す一枚であり、疾走感、哀愁、開放感を同時に求めるリスナーに強く届く。北欧メタルの魅力を端正に凝縮した作品である。

Phoenix refines Nocturnal Rites’ Scandinavian melodic-metal strengths through hard riffs, clear vocal lines and thick, uplifting choruses. Jonny Lindqvist’s voice cuts cleanly through the twin guitars and keyboards, while the record moves between fast propulsion, solid mid-tempo weight and wide-open melodic release. It is not power metal built on brightness alone. The riffs retain enough shadow and hardness to keep the songs from becoming lightweight, and the melodies carry a trace of melancholy beneath their lift. Solos and keyboard lines are used to increase the next chorus’s momentum rather than merely decorate the surface. Turn it up for the kick-drum drive and guitar attack, then return for the hooks working underneath the vocal layers. Phoenix is a polished, energetic statement of the band’s enduring command of melody, speed and atmosphere.
