Grand Illusion

『Grand Illusion』は、硬いリフと大きなコーラスを重ね、NOCTURNAL RITESが北欧メロディック・メタルの完成度を高めた第7作だ。自由の獲得と圧政の克服を主題に掲げ、力強くも叙情的な楽曲を並べている。同年、バンドは結成10周年を迎え、記念公演「Demons at the Opera」ではウメオのオペラハウスで55人編成のオーケストラと共演した。 “Fools Never Die”と“Still Alive”にはビデオも制作された。疾走する冒頭曲から、5分を超える“Our Wasted Days”、終曲の“Deliverance”まで、練り上げられた楽曲が並ぶ。ヨニー・リンドクヴィストの表現力豊かなヴォーカルと、ニルス・ノーバーグの華麗なギターが全編を牽引する。録音は地元ウメオのToontrackスタジオで行われ、“Our Wasted Days”にはPERSUADERのエミル・ノーバーグがゲスト参加している。ベテランらしい風格を備えた、充実の一枚である。「Demons at the Opera」公演はスウェーデンの国営テレビでも放送され、世界的に話題を呼んだ、記念すべき一年の作品である。

Grand Illusion is Nocturnal Rites' seventh album, on which they layered hard riffs and big choruses to raise the completeness of Nordic melodic metal. Taking as its theme the winning of freedom and the overcoming of tyranny, it lines up powerful yet lyrical songs. That same year the band marked its 10th anniversary, and at the commemorative "Demons at the Opera" show they performed with a 55-piece orchestra at the Umeå opera house. Videos were made for "Fools Never Die" and "Still Alive." From the racing opener to the over-five-minute "Our Wasted Days" and the closer "Deliverance," well-crafted songs line up. Jonny Lindkvist's expressive vocals and Nils Norberg's brilliant guitar drive the whole record. It was recorded at Toontrack Studios in their hometown of Umeå, and Emil Norberg of Persuader guests on "Our Wasted Days." An accomplished work with the poise of veterans. The "Demons at the Opera" show was broadcast on Swedish national television and drew worldwide attention — a record from a milestone year for the band.
