『Tales of Mystery and Imagination』は、疾走するギターと幻想的な旋律を組み、NOCTURNAL RITESが北欧パワー・メタルの様式を推し進めた第2作だ。Century Mediaへ移籍した最初の作品であり、リード・ギターにニルス・ノーバーグが加入している。デビュー作にあったNWOBHM的な要素を薄め、よりHELLOWEEN色の濃いパワー・メタルへと焦点を絞った。NOCTURNAL RITESはこの様式を早くから鳴らしていたが、当時はHAMMERFALLらの陰に隠れがちだった。 “Ring of Steel”“Change the World”“Eye of the Demon”といった、勇壮で歌心のある楽曲が並ぶ。アンダース・ザックリソンの伸びやかなヴォーカルと、二本のギターが織りなす旋律が魅力だ。当初は日本のみでリリースされ、翌年ヨーロッパへと展開された。メロディック・パワー・メタルの様式を磨き上げた、充実の一枚である。本作を携え、バンドはOVERKILLらとツアーを重ねてその名を広げていった。地元ウメオから、着実に国際的な評価を積み上げていった時期の一枚だ。

Tales of Mystery and Imagination is Nocturnal Rites' second album, on which they combined racing guitars and fantastical melodies to push the style of Nordic power metal forward. It is their first album after moving to Century Media, and lead guitarist Nils Norberg joins. Thinning the NWOBHM elements of the debut, they narrowed their focus to a more Helloween-tinted power metal. Nocturnal Rites had been playing this style early on, though at the time they were often overshadowed by the likes of HammerFall. Rousing, melodic songs like "Ring of Steel," "Change the World" and "Eye of the Demon" line up. Anders Zackrisson's soaring vocals and the melodies woven by the two guitars are the draw. Initially released only in Japan, it reached Europe the following year. An accomplished record that honed the style of melodic power metal. Touring behind this album with the likes of Overkill, the band spread its name. A record from a period when they steadily built international recognition from their base in Umeå.
