Shadowland

『Shadowland』は、力強い歌と壮麗なメロディで、NOCTURNAL RITESが北欧パワー・メタルの魅力を凝縮した第5作だ。前作『Afterlife』で確立したモダンでヘヴィな路線を受け継ぎつつ、壮大なコーラスとキャッチーな旋律をさらに磨き上げ、北欧らしい哀愁と鋭いリフの緊張感が同居している。プロデュースはMESHUGGAHやIN FLAMESを手掛けたダニエル・バーグストランドが担当した。録音はウプサラのDug-Outスタジオで行われ、ジャケットはロシアの幻想画家レオ・ハオが手掛けた。 冒頭の“Eyes of the Dead”はビデオも制作された代表曲だ。表題曲や“Invincible”“Never Die”まで、疾走感と重量感を併せ持つ楽曲が並ぶ。ヨニー・リンドクヴィストの力強いヴォーカルと、二本のギターが全編を牽引する。モダンなサウンドとクラシックなメタルの要素を高い次元で融合した、充実の一枚である。本作は今日でもバンドの最高傑作の一つとして、ファンや批評家から高く評価されている。疾走する楽曲とダークな中速曲を巧みに配し、モダン・パワー・メタルの一つの到達点を示している。

Shadowland is Nocturnal Rites' fifth album, on which they concentrated the appeal of Nordic power metal with powerful vocals and majestic melodies. Carrying over the modern, heavy direction established on the previous Afterlife, they further honed grand choruses and catchy melodies, with a Nordic sense of melancholy coexisting with the tension of sharp riffs. Production was handled by Daniel Bergstrand, known for his work with Meshuggah and In Flames. It was recorded at Dug-Out Studios in Uppsala, with cover art by the Russian fantasy artist Leo Hao. The opener "Eyes of the Dead" is a signature song that got a video. From the title track to "Invincible" and "Never Die," songs combining drive with heft line up. Jonny Lindkvist's powerful vocals and the two guitars drive the whole record. An accomplished work that fuses modern sound and classic-metal elements at a high level. It is still highly regarded by fans and critics as one of the band's finest works. Skillfully placing racing songs alongside darker mid-tempo ones, it marks a high point of modern power metal.
