『Mr. Big』は、ポール・ギルバートとビリー・シーンの高度な演奏を、歌えるハード・ロックの形へまとめたデビュー作だ。テクニックは随所で鮮やかだが、曲を支えるのはエリック・マーティンのメロディ感と、バンド全体の軽快なグルーヴである。技巧派ミュージシャンの集まりが、ポップな感覚を持ち合わせていることを証明した一枚である。 “Addicted to That Rush”の疾走感からメロディアスな曲まで、演奏の派手さと親しみやすさがぶつからない。ポール・ギルバートとビリー・シーンという、当時から名手として知られた二人のテクニックは圧巻だが、それがエリック・マーティンの歌を邪魔することはない。パット・トーピーの的確なドラムも、バンドの推進力をしっかりと支えている。1988年に結成されたMR. BIGはそれぞれがソロや他バンドで名を馳せた凄腕プレイヤーによる、いわば「スーパーグループ」だった。無名だった彼らは本作で頭角を現し特に日本では絶大な人気を獲得することになる、後の大成功へとつながる確かな才能の片鱗がここには詰まっている。個々の強さをバンドの推進力へと変えた、出発点として完成度の高い一枚だ。派手な技巧と人懐こいメロディが同居する、瑞々しい魅力にあふれたデビュー作である。ハード・ロック・ファンなら一度は聴いておきたい。

Mr. Big is the debut that brought together the advanced playing of Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan into the shape of singable hard rock. The technique is vivid throughout, but what supports the songs is Eric Martin’s melodic sense and the whole band’s light groove. It is a record that proved a gathering of virtuoso musicians also possessed a pop sensibility. From the drive of “Addicted to That Rush” to more melodic songs, the flashiness of the playing and the accessibility do not collide. The technique of Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan — two already known as masters at the time — is stunning, but it never gets in the way of Eric Martin’s singing. Pat Torpey’s precise drumming firmly supports the band’s drive too. Turning individual strength into band drive, it is a highly complete record as a starting point.
