Perfect Timing

『Perfect Timing』は、マイケル・シェンカーが、実力派ヴォーカリストのロビン・マッコーリーと組んだ、「マッコーリー・シェンカー・グループ(MSG)」名義での作品だ。歌うようなフライングVのギター・メロディを軸としながらも、80年代後半という時代を反映し、より洗練された、産業ロック／メロディック・ロック的な方向性を、大胆に打ち出している。マッコーリーの、力強く伸びやかな歌声が、シェンカーのギターと、見事に調和している。 派手なギター・ヒーローとしての側面だけでなく、大きなコーラスと、キャッチーなメロディを重視した、この時期ならではの楽曲が並んでいる。シェンカーのギターは、その卓越した表現力を保ちながらも、あくまで楽曲全体を、美しく彩る役割に徹している。時代の空気を敏感に反映した、意欲的な音楽性の変化が見て取れる一枚だ。 初期の硬派なハード・ロック路線を期待するファンには、意外に映る部分もあるかもしれないが、その洗練されたソングライティングと、質の高い演奏には、確かな聴き応えがある。シェンカーの、また別の一面を垣間見せる、メロディックで華やかな作品だ。マッコーリーとの相性の良さが光る、80年代後半の充実作と言える。

Perfect Timing is a work under the name “McAuley Schenker Group (MSG),” on which Michael Schenker teamed with the powerhouse vocalist Robin McAuley. While centered on the singing Flying-V guitar melody, reflecting the late 1980s, it boldly puts forward a more refined, arena-rock / melodic-rock direction. McAuley’s powerful, soaring voice harmonizes beautifully with Schenker’s guitar. Beyond the flashy guitar-hero side, songs particular to this period, valuing big choruses and catchy melody, line up. Schenker’s guitar, while keeping its outstanding expression, devotes itself to beautifully coloring the whole song. A record where an ambitious change of musicality, sensitively reflecting the air of the era, can be seen. For fans expecting the early hard-edged hard-rock direction, some parts may seem surprising, yet its refined songwriting and high-quality playing are surely engaging. Glimpsing another side of Schenker, it is a melodic, flamboyant work — a fulfilling late-1980s record where the good chemistry with McAuley shines.
