『MSG』は、マイケル・シェンカーの切れ味鋭いリフと、歌うようなリード・ギターを、ゲイリー・バーデンの伸びやかな歌声が力強く支える、初期MSGの充実作だ。前作のデビュー作で確立した路線を、より洗練させた第2作にあたる。曲は複雑さを誇示するのではなく、印象的で美しいギター・フレーズを丁寧に積み上げることで、聴き手に強い高揚感を作り出していく。 冒頭“Ready to Rock”の直進的な推進力、そして躍動感あふれる“Attack of the Mad Axeman”には、ギター・ヒーローとしてのシェンカーの強烈な個性と、バンドとしての力強い推進力とが、両方みなぎっている。“On and On”の叙情、“But I Want More”“Never Trust a Stranger”のような曲も、作品に幅を与えている。 鋭い攻撃性と、シェンカー特有の、胸を締め付けるような哀愁のあるメロディとを、高い次元で兼ね備えている点が本作の魅力だ。彼のギターは、速さだけでなく、一音一音に込められた歌心で、聴き手を強く惹きつける。デビュー作の勢いを受け継ぎ、その音楽性をさらに深めた、初期MSGを代表する充実作の一枚と言える。バーデンの歌も冴えている。

MSG is a fulfilling early-MSG work on which Gary Barden’s soaring voice powerfully supports Michael Schenker’s sharply biting riffs and singing lead guitar. The second album, it refines the direction established on the debut. Rather than showing off complexity, it carefully stacks striking, beautiful guitar phrases to create a strong lift in the listener. The straight drive of the opener “Ready to Rock” and the dynamic “Attack of the Mad Axeman” both brim with Schenker’s powerful character as a guitar hero and the band’s powerful drive, while the lyricism of “On and On” and cuts like “But I Want More” and “Never Trust a Stranger” give the work breadth. Its appeal is holding both sharp aggression and the heart-clenching, melancholy melody particular to Schenker at a high level. His guitar draws the listener strongly not with speed alone but with the songcraft in every single note. Inheriting the debut’s momentum and deepening its musicality further, it is one of the fulfilling works representative of early MSG — Barden’s singing also in fine form.
