Immortal

本作『Immortal』は、マイケル・シェンカーの長きにわたる輝かしいキャリアを祝うかのように、多彩で豪華なゲスト・ヴォーカルを招いて制作された、MSG名義の記念碑的な作品だ。しかし、その主役は一貫して、あくまで歌うように伸びやかなギター・メロディと、無駄を削ぎ落とした、的確なリフの置き方にある。参加した歌手それぞれの個性で、曲ごとの表情は大きく変わるものの、どの場面にも、シェンカーらしい叙情と、鋭い切れ味とが、深く刻み込まれている。 冒頭“Drilled to Kill”の攻撃的な推進力、そして疾走する“Night of the Dead”“Devil's Daughter”まで、収録曲はいずれも、シェンカーのギターの魅力に満ちている。“After the Rain”の叙情、“Sail the Darkness”のような曲も、豪華なゲスト陣と共に、作品の魅力を高めている。ベテランとなってなお、その創作意欲は全く衰えていない。 豪華な顔ぶれの共演を楽しむだけでなく、長年にわたって、少しも変わることのない、“旋律で語るギター”という、シェンカーの根源的な魅力を、存分に味わうことができる一枚だ。彼の不滅の才能を、改めて力強く証明してみせた。ギター・ヒーローとしての存在感が、全編にみなぎる、力強く充実したメロディック・メタル作品と言える。

Immortal is a monumental work under the MSG name, made by inviting varied, gorgeous guest vocals as if to celebrate Michael Schenker’s long, brilliant career. Yet its lead consistently lies in the soaringly singing guitar melody and the accurate, waste-free placement of riffs. Though each participating singer’s character greatly changes the songs’ faces, a Schenker-like lyricism and sharp bite are deeply inscribed in every scene. From the aggressive drive of the opener “Drilled to Kill” to the dashing “Night of the Dead” and “Devil’s Daughter,” every song is full of the appeal of Schenker’s guitar, while the lyricism of “After the Rain” and a cut like “Sail the Darkness” heighten the work’s appeal alongside the gorgeous guests. Even as a veteran, his creative drive has not dimmed at all. A record on which, beyond enjoying the collaboration of a gorgeous cast, you can fully savor Schenker’s fundamental appeal — a guitar that “speaks through melody,” unchanged over long years. Again powerfully proving his immortal talent, it is a powerful, fulfilling melodic-metal work where a guitar hero’s presence fills the whole.
