『The Weight of the World』は、再び動き出したMETAL CHURCHが、硬いギター・リフ、重く踏み込むビート、力強いヴォーカルで伝統的なヘヴィ・メタルの重さを押し出した復活作だ。約5年ぶりとなった本作は、ヴァンダーフーフが主導する新体制のもとで、バンドが2000年代に向けて再び動き出したことを高らかに告げる一枚となった。新たにロニー・マンローをヴォーカルに迎えた編成はバンドに新鮮な力をもたらし、カート・ヴァンダーフーフのリフ・ワークと堅実に噛み合っている。 “Leave Them Behind”“The Weight Of The World”“Sunless Sky”“Wings Of Tomorrow”といった楽曲では、攻撃的なナンバーにもメロディがあり、ミドル・テンポではバンドらしい圧力が際立つ。“Hero's Soul”“Madman's Overture”“Cradle To Grave”“Blood Money”といった楽曲でも、硬質なリフと伸びやかなコーラスが噛み合い、力強い推進力を生んでいる。過度に時代へ寄せることなく、METAL CHURCHの本質である硬派なヘヴィネスを堅実に示した本作は、メンバー・チェンジを経てもサウンドの芯が揺るがないことを証明した、2000年代の再出発を告げる力強い一枚である。

The Weight of the World is a comeback album on which a re-activated METAL CHURCH pushes the weight of traditional heavy metal with hard guitar riffs, heavy beats and powerful vocals. Arriving after roughly five years, it loudly announces that, under a new configuration led by Vanderhoof, the band was moving again toward the 2000s. The lineup, now with Ronny Munroe newly on vocals, brought the band fresh strength and locks in reliably with Kurt Vanderhoof’s riff work. On “Leave Them Behind,” “The Weight Of The World,” “Sunless Sky” and “Wings Of Tomorrow,” even the aggressive numbers carry melody, while the mid-tempo songs bring out the band’s characteristic pressure. On “Hero’s Soul,” “Madman’s Overture,” “Cradle To Grave” and “Blood Money” too, hard riffs and soaring choruses lock together into forceful momentum. Steadily showing the hard-edged heaviness that is METAL CHURCH’s essence without bending too far toward the times, and proving the core of the sound held firm through a lineup change, it is a strong record announcing a 2000s restart.
