『A Light in the Dark』は、METAL CHURCHが鋭いリフ、低く重いリズム、強靭なヴォーカルを軸に、伝統的なアメリカン・ヘヴィ・メタルを鳴らした第8作だ。前作『The Weight of the World』からの流れを受け継ぎ、ロニー・マンローを擁する編成が安定期に入ったことを示す一枚である。ロニー・マンローの力のある歌とカート・ヴァンダーフーフの硬質なギターが引き続き作品を牽引し、曲は過剰に飾られることなく、刻みとリズム隊の圧力がまず耳に残る。 “A Light In The Dark”“Beyond All Reason”“Mirror Of Lies”“The Believer”といった楽曲では、ミドル・テンポの重さと、勢いよく走る場面との切り替えがアルバムに緊張感を与える。“Disappear”“Temples Of The Sea”“Pill For The Kill”“Son Of The Son”“More Than Your Master”といった楽曲でも、重いリフと明快なメロディが一貫して両立している。また初期の名曲“Watch the Children Pray”の新録を収めるなど、自らの歴史を意識した構成も見られる。時代の流行よりもバンド本来の硬派な強さを信じ抜いた、一貫性のある実直な作品だ。

A Light in the Dark is the eighth album on which METAL CHURCH plays traditional American heavy metal built on sharp riffs, low, heavy rhythm and strong vocals. Carrying on from The Weight of the World, it shows the lineup with Ronny Munroe settling into a stable period. Munroe’s forceful singing and Kurt Vanderhoof’s hard guitars continue to lead the record, and the songs, unembellished, register first through their chug and the pressure of the rhythm section. On “A Light In The Dark,” “Beyond All Reason,” “Mirror Of Lies” and “The Believer,” switches between mid-tempo weight and driving passages give the album tension. On “Disappear,” “Temples Of The Sea,” “Pill For The Kill,” “Son Of The Son” and “More Than Your Master” too, heavy riffs and clear melody consistently coexist. It also shows an awareness of its own history, including a re-recording of the early classic “Watch the Children Pray.” Believing in the band’s inherent hard-edged strength over passing trends, it is a consistent, earnest work.
