『Masterpeace』は、90年代半ばの活動停止を経て再始動したMETAL CHURCHが、重いギター・リフ、硬質なドラム、切迫感のあるヴォーカルで攻める正統派ヘヴィ・メタル作品だ。約5年の沈黙を破って発表された復活作であり、カート・ヴァンダーフーフが再びバンドを動かし始めた再出発点として重要な意味を持つ。オリジナル・シンガーのデイヴィッド・ウェインが復帰し、ヴァンダーフーフのリフと再び相対することで、初期作を思わせる荒々しい緊張感が甦っている。 “Sleeps With Thunder”“Falldown”“Masterpeace”“Sand Kings”といった楽曲では、ダークな空気と力強いコーラスが交互に現れ、アルバムには終始引き締まった感触がある。“Into Dust”“Kiss For The Dead”“Faster Than Life”“They Signed In Blood”といった楽曲でも、スピードと重量が同居し、初期作を彷彿とさせる硬派な手触りが貫かれている。エアロスミスの名曲“Toys In The Attic”を取り上げるユーモアも見せながら、伝統を守りつつ攻撃性を失わない姿勢を貫いた。長い空白を経てもバンドの本質が揺るがないことを証明した、再起動期の充実作である。

Masterpeace is a traditional heavy-metal album on which a METAL CHURCH restarted after the mid-1990s hiatus attacks with heavy guitar riffs, hard drums and urgent vocals. A comeback released after roughly five years of silence, it carries real weight as the point where Kurt Vanderhoof set the band in motion again. Original singer David Wayne returned, and facing Vanderhoof’s riffs once more revives a raw tension reminiscent of the early records. On “Sleeps With Thunder,” “Falldown,” “Masterpeace” and “Sand Kings,” dark atmosphere and strong choruses alternate, giving the album a tight feel throughout. On “Into Dust,” “Kiss For The Dead,” “Faster Than Life” and “They Signed In Blood” too, speed and weight coexist, sustaining a hard-edged touch that recalls the early work. Showing some humor by taking up Aerosmith’s “Toys In The Attic,” the band held to keeping tradition without losing aggression. Proving that its essence had not wavered even after a long gap, it is an accomplished work of the reactivation period.
