The Human Factor

『The Human Factor』は、METAL CHURCHが切れ味のあるギター、重く動くリズム、マイク・ハウの力強い歌をまとまり良く鳴らし、正統派メタルとしての完成度を大きく高めた第4作だ。マイク・ハウを迎えた第2作にあたる本作は、前作『Blessing in Disguise』で示した方向性をさらに推し進め、社会的な題材と重量級のサウンドをより緊密に結び付けている。スラッシュ由来の硬さは残しつつも、楽曲は性急さだけに頼らず、ミドル・テンポの圧力とメロディの起伏で迫ってくる。 表題曲“The Human Factor”や“Date With Poverty”“In Mourning”“In Harm's Way”では、現実的で緊張感のある歌詞世界と、堅牢なリフ・ワークが分かちがたく結び付いている。“The Final Word”“In Due Time”“Agent Green”“Betrayed”といった楽曲でも、緻密なリフ・ワークと力強い歌が一体となり、アルバムに厚みと一貫性を与えている。“The Fight Song”のような攻撃的なナンバーも、ただ速いだけでなく確かなフックを備えている。80年代の攻撃性を土台にしながら、90年代のバンドとしての深みと安定感を示した本作は、METAL CHURCHの代表作の一つとして高く評価されている。

The Human Factor is the fourth album on which METAL CHURCH brings together cutting guitars, heavy, moving rhythm and Mike Howe’s powerful voice, sharply raising its craft as a traditional-metal band. Howe’s second album with the group, it pushes the direction of Blessing in Disguise further, binding social subject matter to a heavyweight sound more tightly. The hardness inherited from thrash remains, but the songs never rely on urgency alone, pressing in with mid-tempo weight and the rise and fall of melody. On the title track “The Human Factor” and on “Date With Poverty,” “In Mourning” and “In Harm’s Way,” a realistic, tension-filled lyrical world is inseparable from robust riff work. On “The Final Word,” “In Due Time,” “Agent Green” and “Betrayed” too, intricate riffing and powerful singing act as one, giving the album depth and consistency. Even an aggressive number like “The Fight Song” has firm hooks rather than mere speed. Grounded in 1980s aggression while showing the depth and stability of a 1990s band, it is highly regarded as one of METAL CHURCH’s signature works.
