Everblack

『Everblack』は、デス・メタルの攻撃性とクリーン・ヴォーカルの旋律を融合した、MERCENARYの野心作である第二作だ。ヴォーカルのミッケル・サナヤーと、キーボードの兄モートンが加入したことで、バンドは大きく変貌を遂げた。クラルのデス声とサナヤーのクリーン・ヴォーカルが交錯する、二枚看板の様式がここで確立されている。重厚さとメロディを両立させた作風には、NEVERMOREからの影響もうかがえる。荒々しさとキャッチーさが同居する、聴きごたえのある一枚だ。 “Everblack”“Seize the Night”“Bulletblues”といった、重厚かつ旋律的な楽曲が並ぶ。プロデュースは、以降も長く組むことになるヤコブ・ハンセンが手掛けた。ジャケットは、OPETHやKATATONIAで知られるトラヴィス・スミスが担当している。単なるデス／スラッシュ・バンドから、独自の存在へと飛躍した重要作である。以前は堅実なデス／スラッシュ・バンドだった彼らが、ここで唯一無二の個性を獲得した。デス・メタルの攻撃性を土台に、旋律とドラマ性を大胆に取り込んだ本作は、その後のMERCENARY像の礎となった。

Everblack is Mercenary's second album, an ambitious work fusing death metal's aggression with the melody of clean vocals. With the arrival of vocalist Mikkel Sandager and his keyboardist brother Morten, the band underwent a major transformation. The twin-vocal style, in which Kral's death growls and Sandager's clean vocals intertwine, was established here. The style, balancing heaviness with melody, also shows the influence of Nevermore. It is a rewarding record where rawness and catchiness coexist. Heavy yet melodic songs like "Everblack," "Seize the Night" and "Bulletblues" line up. Production was handled by Jacob Hansen, with whom they would work for a long time afterward. The cover art was created by Travis Smith, known for Opeth and Katatonia. An important work on which they leapt from a mere death/thrash band into something of their own. Previously a solid death/thrash band, here they acquired a one-of-a-kind identity. Building on death metal's aggression while boldly taking in melody and drama, it laid the foundation for the Mercenary to come.
