United Abominations

『United Abominations』は、MEGADETHが、政治的な苛立ちと、複雑で技巧的なギター・ワークとを、力強く結び付けた第11作だ。デイヴ・ムステインの声とリフは、互いに鋭く噛み合い、曲に切迫した速度感と、冷たい緊張とを与えている。前作で復活を果たしたバンドが、その攻撃性をさらに研ぎ澄ました一枚である。 冒頭“Sleepwalker”の疾走、国連を痛烈に批判した“Washington Is Next!”の攻撃性、そしてゲーム作品でも使われた“Gears of War”の緊張感まで、収録曲はいずれも鋭い。名バラード“À Tout le Monde”を、ゲスト・ヴォーカルを迎えて再録音した“À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free)”も、大きな話題となった。 メロディを生かした曲の陰影から、苛烈な疾走曲まで、アルバムは単なる懐古では決して終わらない。スラッシュ・メタルの緻密な設計を、現代の鋭い問題意識へと接続してみせた点に、本作の意義がある。“Never Walk Alone”“Play for Blood”のような曲でも、技巧的なリフと切迫した速度感が結び付いている。ベテランとなってなお、その攻撃性と技巧が全く衰えていないことを証明した、力強く充実したスラッシュ・メタル作品と言える。

United Abominations is the eleventh album on which Megadeth powerfully binds political irritation and complex, technical guitar work. Dave Mustaine’s voice and riffs mesh sharply, giving the songs an urgent speed and a cold tension. It is a record on which the band, having revived on the previous album, further sharpens its aggression. From the speed of the opener “Sleepwalker” and the aggression of “Washington Is Next!,” a scathing critique of the UN, to the tension of “Gears of War,” used in a game too, every song is sharp. A re-recording of the fine ballad “À Tout le Monde” with a guest vocal, “À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free),” also drew great attention. From the shading of melody-rich songs to fierce dashing songs, the album by no means ends as mere nostalgia. Its significance lies in connecting the precise design of thrash metal to a sharp present-day problem awareness. Proving that, even as veterans, its aggression and technique have not dimmed at all, it is a powerful, fulfilling thrash-metal record.
