本作『Drama』は、MARTY FRIEDMANが、ギターを、単なる技巧の道具としてではなく、あくまで、物語を語る一つの声として使うことを、改めて力強く示した、2024年のインストゥルメンタル作品だ。歌メロのように印象的なフレーズ、そして、演歌的な、深い哀感にも通じる独特の抑揚、さらに、予想を鮮やかに外していく和声とが、各楽曲に、確かで鮮やかな輪郭を与えている。ベテランとなってなお、その創作意欲は、少しも衰えていない一枚である。 冒頭を飾る“Illumination”、そして“Song for an Eternal Child”のドラマ性、さらに“Triumph”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Thrill City”、そして“Deep End”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。マーティ・フリードマンの、あの歌心あふれる卓越したギターが、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 速く技巧的なパッセージも、確かにあるが、その本当の聴きどころは、決して、指の速さなのではなく、あくまで、感情の、その豊かな運び方にある一枚だ。静かな場面から、急に視界が、大きく開けるような展開まで、楽曲は、そのタイトルの通り、まるで映画のような、確かなドラマを作り出していく。ギター・インストに、あまり馴染みがない人にも、その旋律の、確かな強さから入ることのできる、聴き応えのある一枚と言える。ギタリストの円熟が光る一枚だ。

Drama is a 2024 instrumental work on which Marty Friedman again powerfully shows using the guitar not as a mere tool of technique but as a voice that tells a story. Phrases as striking as vocal melody, distinctive inflection connected to deep, enka-like sorrow and harmony that vividly defies expectation give each song a sure, vivid outline. A record on which, even as a veteran, its creative drive has not dimmed in the least. From the opener “Illumination” and the drama of “Song for an Eternal Child” to a cut like “Triumph,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Thrill City” and “Deep End” convey the work’s fullness. Marty Friedman’s songcraft-filled, outstanding guitar is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record on which fast, technical passages certainly exist, yet its true highlight is by no means finger speed but the rich carrying of emotion. From quiet passages to developments where the view suddenly opens wide, the songs, true to the title, create a sure, cinematic drama. An engaging record that even those not very familiar with guitar instrumentals can enter from the sure strength of its melody — a record where the guitarist’s maturity shines.
