Unto the Locust

『Unto the Locust』は、MACHINE HEADが低くうなるリフ、複雑なリズム、長尺のドラマを重ね、グルーヴ・メタルの重量感をさらに拡張した作品だ。ロブ・フリンの荒々しい歌とメロディックな歌唱が、曲の攻撃性と感情を両方支えている。前作『The Blackening』の壮大な路線を、さらに洗練させた一枚である。 “I Am Hell (Sonata in C#)”“Locust”“This Is the End”といった楽曲では、激しいパートだけでなく、静けさやリード・ギターが大きな起伏を作っている。“Be Still and Know”“Who We Are”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。前作『The Blackening』で確立した壮大な作風を本作はさらに緻密に磨き上げており、クラシカルな要素やコーラス・ワークも取り入れられてバンドの表現の幅は大きく広がった。全7曲という凝縮された構成の中に、バンドの野心と技巧が余すところなく詰め込まれた円熟期の充実作だ。ヘヴィネスと美旋律の融合はここに一つの理想形を見出しており、バンドの表現力の高さを存分に堪能できる一枚だ。ヘヴィネスと構築美を両立させている。バンドの野心と成熟が高い次元で結実した、充実した一枚だ。

Unto the Locust is a work on which MACHINE HEAD layered low-groaning riffs, complex rhythm and long-form drama, further expanding the weight of groove metal. Robb Flynn’s rough singing and melodic singing both support the songs’ aggression and emotion. It is a record that further refined the grand direction of the previous album, The Blackening. On “I Am Hell (Sonata in C#),” “Locust” and “This Is the End,” not only fierce parts but quiet and lead guitar make large undulation. Songs like “Be Still and Know” and “Who We Are” breathe the band’s full playing too. They balance heaviness and constructive beauty. It is a full record on which the band’s ambition and maturity bore fruit at a high level.
