『The More Things Change...』は、MACHINE HEADが重量級のリフ、荒々しいシャウト、ねじれたグルーヴをさらに濃くした作品だ。曲は速さだけを競わず、重い一撃を何度も叩き込むように進んでいく。新ドラマーのデイヴ・マクレインを迎え、バンドの土台がいっそう強固になった一枚である。 “Ten Ton Hammer”“Take My Scars”“Struck a Nerve”といった楽曲では、音の密度は高いが、リズムの間合いとギターのうねりが明確なので、ただの騒音にはならない。“The Frontlines”“Bay of Pigs”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。怒りと焦燥を身体的な演奏へ変えている。デビュー作の衝撃を受け継いだ本作でもバンドは重量感のあるグルーヴ・メタルを徹底して追求しており、ロブ・フリンのシャウトはさらに攻撃性を増し、ギターのリフはより硬質で執拗になった。“Blistering”“Blood of the Zodiac”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。怒りと重圧を音に変えるバンドの核が、いっそう明確になった一枚だ。デビュー作の路線を、より重く突き詰めた重圧感の強い一枚である。

The More Things Change... is a work on which MACHINE HEAD thickened heavyweight riffs, rough shouts and twisted groove further. The songs do not compete on speed alone, advancing as if driving in a heavy blow again and again. Welcoming new drummer Dave McClain, it is a record on which the band’s foundation became even more solid. On “Ten Ton Hammer,” “Take My Scars” and “Struck a Nerve,” the density of sound is high, but because the spacing of the rhythm and the surge of the guitar are clear, it does not become mere noise. Songs like “The Frontlines” and “Bay of Pigs” breathe the band’s full playing too. They turn anger and impatience into physical playing. It is a heavily pressured record that pursued the debut’s direction more heavily.
