Supercharger

『Supercharger』は、MACHINE HEADが持つ低重心のグルーヴを、より現代的なリズムと音圧で鳴らした作品だ。ロブ・フリンの声は怒号とメロディの間を行き来し、曲の緊張を保ち続ける。前作で接近したモダンなサウンドを、さらに推し進めた一枚である。 “Bulldozer”“Crashing Around You”“Kick You When You're Down”といった楽曲では、重いリフを反復させながらも、各曲はビートの置き方で表情を変えている。“White-Knuckle Blackout!”“American High”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。前作で試みたモダンな方向性を本作ではさらに洗練させており、シングル“Crashing Around You”のミュージック・ビデオは同時多発テロを想起させるとして公開が見送られるなど不運にも見舞われた。それでも本作には、バンドの一貫したヘヴィネスへのこだわりが刻まれている。勢いを前面に出した作風の中にも、バンドのダイナミクスへの意識が残っている。同時多発テロ直後という不運な時期に発表され、正当な評価を得にくかったが、バンドの一時代を刻んだ一枚である。

Supercharger is a work on which MACHINE HEAD sounded their low-centered groove with more modern rhythm and sonic pressure. Robb Flynn’s voice moves between roars and melody, continually keeping the songs’ tension. It is a record that pushed the modern sound approached on the previous album further. On “Bulldozer,” “Crashing Around You” and “Kick You When You're Down,” while repeating heavy riffs, each song changes expression by the placement of the beat. Songs like “White-Knuckle Blackout!” and “American High” breathe the band’s full playing too. Even within a style that foregrounds momentum, an awareness of the band’s dynamics remains. Released at the unlucky time just after the September 11 attacks and thus hard to evaluate fairly, it is nonetheless a record that carved an era for the band.
